Thailand
Ah, my bias. The only place I have called home apart from the US, and from the bustling city of Bangkok to the countryside, unreal beaches, amazing cuisine, and kind-hearted people the country of Thailand will never be erased from your mind, even when you leave. The country has a riveting and sometimes confusing history and rich culture to learn about.
Thailand is the place to laugh and smile as long as you come with mindfulness and an open heart.
Vietnam
With the buzzing city life of Hanoi, the otherwordly beauty of the northern mountains, the best coffee, and the deep and rich culture accompanied by friendly people, the country of Vietnam is a standout. Vietnam is full of hidden gems as well as the notorious draws, such as great food and the increasingly popular Hà Giang Loop. I had never been somewhere so different from where I grew up, and there is no shortage of things to learn from Vietnamese history and culture.
Costa Rica
Experience unmatched nature in Costa Rica. With an abundance of wildlife, stunning landscapes, beautiful beaches, and an opportunity for adventure around every corner, Costa Rica is perfect for nature and adventure-loving travelers. Hike through a jungle, zipline over trees, or pick up a surfboard and head for the sea. I had so many firsts in the country: first time seeing a whale in the wild, first time watching turtles hatch and race to the ocean, and the first time I felt like a true backpacker. Costa Rica is uniquely colorful and vibrant with an interesting history and Pura Vida culture.
Nicaragua
The land of volcanoes, fiestas, and filled to the brim with unique history and stunning landscapes. Nicaragua was the definition of a pleasant surprise for me. From the hippie vibes of Ometepe Island, volcano sledding, insane surf, and famous backpacker parties, there is truly something for every type of traveler. With just a bit of caution, Nicaragua entails a story you will never forget.
México
The place that shaped me from birth but that I never got to visit until adulthood. México es mágico. The country truly has its all-from vast varying landscapes of deserts to waterfalls to mountains, forests, and beaches. You will encounter amazing wildlife, kind people, delicious food, and a deep and vibrant culture shaped by a crazy history. The vibes and experiences in Mexico can be as colorful as the streets, punctuated by papel picado, murals, and the assortments of street vendors selling everything from fruit to clocks on the side of the road. No matter how small the pueblo, live music often fills the air. Mexico is a place that once you leave you will always want to go back.
Guatemala
Nearly half of the population of Guatemala are indigenous. This can be seen easily as you walk through the streets and see women dressed in their colorful traje típico, handwoven garments both beautiful and functional. Every stop I made in Guatemala felt unique from the last and I had barely scratched the surface. Whether you want to explore ancient ruins, watch lava erupt from an active volcano, or explore lake side villages by water taxi, Guatemala promises adventure to any traveler.
